The Root Canal Procedure: Step-by-Step
The procedure is highly common and is typically completed over one or two appointments. We ensure your absolute comfort throughout the process.
Diagnosis & Numbing
We use digital X-rays to confirm the extent of the infection. A local anaesthetic is then administered to completely numb the tooth and surrounding area, ensuring a pain-free procedure.
Access
A small opening is made in the crown (top) of the tooth to access the infected pulp chamber and root canals.
Cleaning & Shaping
The infected pulp, nerve tissue, and bacteria are carefully removed from the canals using specialised, flexible instruments. The canals are thoroughly cleaned and shaped.
Sealing
Once disinfected, the empty canals are filled and sealed with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha.
Restoration
Because a root canal-treated tooth can be weakened, we usually recommend placing a Crown over the tooth to protect it from fracture, restore full function, and ensure a long-lasting result.

Is a root canal painful?
No. This is a common misconception. Since the tooth is completely numbed with local anaesthetic before the procedure, the treatment itself is no more painful than getting a large Tooth Filling. The goal is actually to eliminate the severe pain caused by the existing infection.
How long does the treatment take?
The initial cleaning and sealing appointment usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes. Depending on the complexity of the infection, a second appointment may be required to place the permanent filling or prepare the tooth for a Crown.
Will I need a crown after the root canal?
In most cases, yes. Root canal treatment removes the nerve and blood supply, which can make the tooth brittle and susceptible to fracture. A protective Crown is highly recommended to cover and reinforce the tooth, ensuring its long-term survival.
What are the signs I might need a root canal?
Common signs include persistent, severe tooth pain (especially when chewing), prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold (even after the source is removed), swelling around the gum, or a small pimple-like bump on the gum (called a fistula).
